The invention relates to a detection method for a braking fault of an escalator. The method comprises the following steps that the real-time operation power of the escalator is measured after the escalator reaches a normal operation speed; the measured real-time operation power is compared with nominal operation power; when the real-time operation power is smaller than the product of the nominal operation power and the threshold value factor, the real-time operation power of the escalator continues to be measured, and a control unit of the escalator does not give out a braking fault alarm; when the real-time operation power is greater than or equal to the product of the nominal operation power and the threshold factor, the control unit of the escalator gives the braking fault alarm.
