The invention relates to the possibility for operating a brake system of a vehicle (9). The brake system comprises at least one retarder (6) and a disconnect clutch (7) for connecting and disconnecting the retarder (6) to and from a force flow of a drive train (1, 2, 3, 4) of the vehicle. In this case, a driving situation present in a user request (R) for a braking operation (R *) of the retarder(6) of the vehicle (9) is learned or already learned. When the driving situation corresponding to the learned travel situation occurs thereafter, the disconnect clutch (7) is closed.
