The present disclosure sets forth an apparatus and method for providing movement for a payload with respect to at least two degrees of freedom. A pan-tilt mechanism as described herein can provide payload with rotation about at least two different axes, wherein such rotation about the two axes is controlled by two actuators that can be actuated independently of each other. The two actuators can befixed in position and orientation relative to each other so that either actuator is not driven by the other actuator. Thus, the pan-tilt mechanism is capable of controlling the movement of the payload with respect to two degrees of freedom in a parallel mode. The pan-tilt mechanism described herein can have a compact configuration that allows for minimizing the volume and weight of the pan-tilt mechanism while improving movement augmentation provided by the pan-tilt mechanism.
