Provided is a windlass that prevents damage to a hydraulic motor caused by surge pressure generated inside the hydraulic motor. The windlass 26 winds up an anchor chain 27 by using a hydraulic motor 4driven by hydraulic pressure supplied from a hydraulic pump 2 via a hydraulic pressure supply unit 3. The windlass comprises: an accumulator 15 that is connected to the hydraulic pressure supply unit3 and dampens shock from hydraulic pressure; a chain counter 34 that measures the amount R of anchor chain 27 that is wound out; and an electric valve 18 for selectively setting the connection stateof the accumulator 15 relative to the hydraulic pressure supply unit 3 to an on state in which accumulator 15 is connected to the hydraulic pressure supply unit 3 or an off state in which the connection is released, setting same in accordance with the wind-out amount R.
