A regenerative elevator drive is arranged to receive power from an external power source and provide regenerative energy thereto, and is arranged to direct excess regenerative energy through a dynamicbrake resistor. The inverter is arranged to receive a DC voltage obtained from an external power supply and to convert the DC voltage to an AC voltage for output to an external motor. A DC link capacitor is bridged at the input of the inverter. The circuit breaker unit is arranged to switch between a first state providing a connection between the inverter and an external power source and a secondstate disconnecting the inverter from the external power source. The circuit breaker unit is arranged to provide a discharge path from the DC link capacitor via the dynamic brake resistor only in thesecond state. The driver may also determine a state of health and/or an expected life of the battery by passing current from the battery through the dynamic brake resistor.
