The invention discloses a control system and method for controlling startup and shutdown of multiple passenger conveyors. The system comprises remote cameras and remote controllers which are respectively arranged corresponding to each of multiple passenger conveyors. The control system furthermore comprises a monitoring server; the remote cameras are used for capturing images of external states ofthe corresponding passenger conveyors in real time; the remote controllers are arranged to control and collect the running states of the corresponding passenger conveyors; the monitoring server is connected with the remote cameras and the remote controllers through a data network; the monitoring server utilizes an artificial intelligence algorithm for analyzing the images captured through the remote cameras to judge whether or not there are passengers on the passenger conveyors; when the monitoring servers judge that there are passengers on the corresponding passenger conveyors, the passengerconveyors are grouped to passenger conveyors which cannot be automatically started up and shut down, and when the monitoring servers judge that there are no passengers on the corresponding passengerconveyors, the passenger conveyors are grouped to those capable of being automatically started up and shut down.
