The application relates to a hybrid power system and a control method thereof. The hybrid power system comprises a range extender system, a power battery system and a whole vehicle controller. The range extender system includes an engine, a clutch, a generator, and a range extender control device. The whole vehicle controller is used for being electrically connected with an advancing driving system. And the whole vehicle controller is also used for receiving an operation instruction of a driver and the state information of the whole vehicle and the parts, so that the range extender system andthe power battery system provide energy for a loading system and the advancing driving system based on the operation instruction of the driver and the state information of the whole vehicle and the parts. The engine can directly transmit mechanical energy to the loading system through the clutch and the output shaft of the generator, and the generator can also work in an electric mode to provide mechanical energy for the loading system. The hybrid power system is applied to the vehicle with the loading system, so that the vehicle with the loading system is more energy-saving and environment-friendly than a traditional fuel vehicle; meanwhile, the vehicle with the loading system solves ae problem that the endurance mileage of a pure electric vehicle is short.
