The invention discloses an overweight vehicle arresting system and method, and the system comprises a weighing subsystem, an arresting subsystem, an alarm device, an image collection device, and a data processing and control device, and the weighing subsystem is used for weighing a vehicle; in the vehicle passing direction, the arresting subsystem is located in the downstream of the weighing subsystem; the shooting angle of the image collection device faces an area between the arresting subsystem and the weighing subsystem; the data processing and control device is connected with the weighingsubsystem, the arresting subsystem, the alarm device and the image acquisition device and used for controlling the alarm device to give an alarm, controlling the arresting subsystem to be started andjudging whether the overweight vehicle is driven into a turn-around area or not according to the shot images when the passing vehicle is overweight, and if yes, alarm and arresting are relieved. The system can automatically detect, warn and intercept overweight vehicles, maintain the passing order of bridges and roads, and guarantee the safety of bridges, roads, passing vehicles and pedestrians.
