Disclosed is a method for monitoring at least one suspension means in an elevator system, the suspension means comprising at least one electrically conducting tension load carrying member that is surrounded by an electrically insulating jacket. The disclosed method involves the steps of: repeatedly determining a value of an electric characteristic of at least one tension load carrying member or ofa group of tension load carrying members; establishing a mean value on the basis on the determined values; and comparing the established mean value with a reference value.
