An in-vehicle network system, an electronic control unit, and an irregularity detection method are provided. The irregularity detection method is used in an in-vehicle network system that is providedwith a plurality of electronic control units that communicate via an in-vehicle network. The irregularity detection method comprises: a reception step in which a data frame that is transmitted over the in-vehicle network is received; and a verification step in which a specific identifier within the data frame is verified only when an event-driven data frame is received in the reception step and the state of the vehicle equipped with the in-vehicle network system is running. In the verification step, when the verification for the specific identifier is successful, the data frame is detected asa normal data frame. In the verification step, when the verification for the specific identifier fails, the data frame is detected as an abnormal data frame.
