The invention relates to the technical field of captive balloon systems. The invention discloses a captive balloon cable drag reduction device and method. The captive balloon mooring rope drag reduction device comprises at least one streamline fairing rotationally installed on a mooring rope, wherein a first positioning ring is arranged at the position, close to the upper end of the streamline fairing, of the mooring rope, and a second positioning ring is arranged at the position, close to the lower end of the streamline fairing, of the mooring rope. According to the captive balloon cable dragreduction device and method, the wind resistance of the captive balloon cable can be remarkably reduced, and the lift-off height of the captive balloon is increased.
