This compensation device for an elevator has: a compensation rope connected to a passenger car and a balancing weight and suspended inside a hoistway; and a connection part having one side attached tothe passenger car and the other side to which the compensation rope is attached. The connection part of this compensation device is configured such that, after an emergency stop device is actuated, the compensation rope and the passenger car have different decelerations while staying connected to each other. In addition, the connection part is provided with: a first fixture attached to the passenger car; a second fixture to which one end of the compensation rope is attached; a cable body having one end connected to the passenger car side and the other end connected to the second fixture; anda third fixture which is attached to one end of a governor rope and connects the first fixture and the second fixture. In this compensation device, when the governor device detects an overspeed travelof the passenger car, the compensation rope is separated from the passenger car according to the displacement of the governor rope.
