An image displayed on an image display unit (12) is illuminated by an image illuminating unit (100), and using a display optical system (2, 14, 16) having at least one concave mirror element (16), the image is displayed to the driver as a virtual image. The illuminating unit (100) is equipped with a light-emitting surface (104b) for emitting light for illumination purposes, and a lens array (102) for splitting and focusing the entrance pupil (6) of the display optical system (2, 14, 16) of the eyebox (5) onto the light-emitting surface (104b). In so doing, the light-emitting surface (104b) and the eyebox (5) have a coupled relationship through the agency of the lens array (102) and the display optical system (2, 14, 16), whereby light emitted towards the lens array (102) from the light-emitting surface (104b) can efficiently reach the eyebox (5). As a result, the light can be used efficiently for illumination purposes, thus making possible virtual display of high-luminance images, with the need to increase the luminance of the light source, or decrease the number of displayable colors.
