The invention relates to a method for operating a navigation system (20, 20') for a motor vehicle (18) with autopilot (34), wherein the autopilot (34) is designed to automatically carry out longitudinal and lateral guidance of the motor vehicle (18) in the activated state during a piloted journey without assistance from a driver. The invention is based on the object of making it possible for a user of the motor vehicle to use the autopilot in a targeted or planned manner. For this purpose, in the method, the navigation system (20, 20') determines, for a destination (28) prescribed by the user, a route (30) to the destination (28) on the basis of navigation data. The roads (12, 14, 16) on which the activation of the autopilot (34) is likely to be possible is determined using traffic data and on the basis of a predetermined activation condition for the autopilot (34).
