The invention provides a four-wheel drive vehicle which enables enhancement of responsiveness to switching from a two-wheel drive state to a four-wheel drive state while suppressing an increase in a drag torque of the clutches, and a method for controlling the four-wheel drive vehicle. The four-wheel drive vehicle (200) includes a driving force transmission and cut-off apparatus (3) that enables cut-off of transmission of a driving force from an engine (202) to a propeller shaft (2), a driving shaft (112) that rotates under a tuning force of the propeller shaft (2), a pair of hydraulic clutches (12A, 12B) and each disposed between the driving shaft (112) and a corresponding one of rear wheels (205L, 205R), and a control apparatus (10) that controls a hydraulic unit (14) that supplies hydraulic oil to the hydraulic clutches (12A, 12B). In shifting the two-wheel drive state to the four-wheel drive state of the four-wheel drive vehicle (200), the control apparatus (10) controls the hydraulic unit (14) such that a higher priority is given to supply of the hydraulic oil to the hydraulic clutch (12A) than to supply of the hydraulic oil to the hydraulic clutch (12B).
