The invention discloses a mobile robot and an operation method thereof, which relate to the technical field of robots. According to the invention, the mobile robot comprises a robot main body, wherein the robot main body is supported by a wheel body; the wheel body comprises a planet wheel structure and a belt wheel structure; the planet wheel structure comprises a central wheel and planet gears, wherein the planet gears are engaged with the central wheel; the belt wheel structure comprises a plurality of belt wheels; the number of the belt wheels is as same as that of the planet gears; the planet wheel structure is supplied with power through a transmission mechanism; and the belt wheel structure moves relative to the ground so as to drive the mobile robot to move. According to the invention, the operation method can be passively self-adapt to different ground environments on the basis of the structure of the mobile robot so as to climb over different obstacles. According to the invention, through the adoption of the mobile robot and the operation method thereof, problems that the traditional mobile robot has complicated structure, the system of the traditional mobile robot is instable and the traditional mobile robot cannot adapt to the ground environments according to its structure can be solved.
