The invention discloses an elevator electromagnetic braking device and an operation method thereof. The elevator electromagnetic braking device comprises safety tongs for clamping guide rails when a lift car is in an abnormal displacement state and two braking arms for pushing the safety tongs to conduct clamping in the abnormal displacement state of the lift cat. An electromagnet is arranged between the other ends of the two braking arms. The two ends of the electromagnet are provided with stretching rods capable of stretching outwards. Springs are arranged between the end face of the electromagnet and the near braking arms. The stretching rods are hinged to the near braking arms through bolts. The springs are connected to the stretching rods in a sleeving mode. The lift car is provided with a control box for controlling the electromagnet to work. The input end of the control box is electrically connected with the output end of an elevator control mainboard for controlling the elevator to operate, and the output end of the control box is electrically connected with the input end of the electromagnet. The elevator electromagnetic braking device can act when an existing elevator braking device is invalid, and the elevator is in the abnormal displacement state, and the dangers of abnormal displacement are prevented from expanding continuously.
