The invention provides an elevator braking detection method and an elevator controller. The method comprises: S1, by the controller, controlling a lift car to stop running and enabling all brake devices of an elevator to brake; S2, by the controller, controlling a frequency converter to output current, promoting a motor to produce a first directional torque, and detecting a detection signal fed back by an encoder in real time within preset time so as to judge whether the motor rotates or not; S3, by the controller, controlling the frequency converter to output current, enabling the motor to output a second directional torque which is identical but opposite to the first directional torque in the S2, and detecting the detection signal fed back by the encoder in real time within preset time so as to judge whether the motor rotates or not; and S4, if the motor does not rotate in the step S2 as well as the step S3, judging that braking is qualified, and otherwise, judging that braking is not qualified. The method effectively avoids complicated work, such as transporting and loading, in the process of a common detection method, and compensates the problem of insufficient torque finally acting on braking, caused by the uncertain difference and direction of actual weight on the two sides of the motor, of single direction torque detection.
