The invention discloses an alternating-current excitation rail eddy-current brake and a braking method thereof and aims at solving the problems that in the existing direct-current excitation rail eddy-current braking technology, when a train is braked, a great amount of heat is generated by eddy currents on steel rails, the rail temperature is raised, the eddy-current braking force is affected, meanwhile, mechanical properties of the steel rails are changed due to the temperature rise, the steel rails are softened, and steel rail lives are shortened; in addition, an excitation power source is required to be added for rail eddy-current braking, electric energy needs to be consumed in the braking process, danger of outage and brake failure in case of insufficient electric energy exists, and when the train is at the low speed, the braking force is small and applicable to the narrow vehicle speed range. A groove is formed in the side, facing air gaps, of a primary iron core in the vertical direction, a control winding and a power winding are placed in the groove in an embedded mode, the power winding is in parallel connection with a polyphase excitation capacitor bank and the input end of a polyphase rectifier, and the output end of the polyphase rectifier is connected to a direct current bus of a vehicle main traction motor inverter; the output end of an excitation control inverter is connected with the control winding. The brake can be applied to train braking.
