A vehicle power unit (100) charges a storage battery (21) by supplying charging power from a power conversion circuit (1a) via a connector (3) connected to an inlet (22) of an electric vehicle (101). A stress detector (4) detects the force applied to a junction portion (5) according to the tensile strength of an electric cable (2). When the detected force is smaller than a threshold (K1), a control unit (1b) initiates the output of charging power from the power conversion circuit (1a). When the force detected during the output of the charging power from the power conversion circuit (1a) is equal to or greater than the threshold (K1), the control unit issues a warning through a display unit (1d) and a sound output unit (1e). When the force detected during the output of the charging power from the power conversion circuit (1a) is equal to or greater than a threshold (K2) (> K1), the control unit suspends the output of the charging power from the power conversion circuit (1a).
