The present invention provides a traffic early warning method based on a GPS and a traffic early warning system based on the GPS. The method comprises the steps of obtaining the position information of a first target and a second target periodically; calculating the actual distance between the first and second targets according to the obtained position information; comparing the actual distance with a preset distance threshold value, if the actual distance is not greater than the preset distance threshold value, determining whether the first and second targets are possible to impact in a radius range of the preset distance threshold value; if yes, sending an early warning signal to the first and second targets; if no, not sending the early warning signal. According to the present invention, when people and vehicles or the vehicles approach each other, by determining whether the paths of the two parties are possible to impact, the early warning signal is further determined whether to be sent to remind the two parties to slow down or avoid, thereby achieving the safe travel purpose.
