The invention belongs to the technical field of active safety of vehicles, and particularly relates to a blind-area monitoring system for vehicles. The blind-area monitoring system comprises a main controller. After receiving vehicle gear information and vehicle speed information, the main controller judges whether a vehicle is in a reversing state or a running state; when the vehicle is in the reversing state, the main controller receives the information output by a millimeter-wave radar; when the vehicle is in the running state, the main controller receives the information output by a millimeter-wave radar, the on-off input information of a steering lamp and/or the steering-angle information of a steering wheel, the main controller outputs a corresponding control command according to the received information to an alarm unit, so that the alarm unit is driven to work. Besides, the invention further discloses a control method of the blind-area monitoring system. The blind-area monitoring system can simultaneously realize a safety detecting function when the vehicle changes lanes and a collision avoiding function when the vehicle backs off; according to the collision avoiding function, when the vehicle backs off and a moving target approaches to the vehicle, the moving target can be discovered, and an alarm can be sent out, so that the situation that because the image input recognition is slow, the alarm is delayed is avoided; besides, the blind-area detection during lane changing and the collision avoiding function during backing the vehicle can share one system, so that the cost increase and display interference which are caused by the mounting of respective systems are avoided.
