The invention provides an intersection turning vehicle number estimating method and system. The turning vehicle number estimating method comprises the steps that loop detectors are installed at partial intersections, the number of turning vehicles are detected according to different lane functions, and historical data collection and recording are carried out, so that the number of the vehicles which are going to turn is estimated according to the number of the vehicles entering lanes; and for the road sections without the loop detectors, the number of the vehicles are sampled by GPS data statistics of probe vehicles, and according to the similarity among the intersections, the number of the turning vehicles at the intersections having no loop detectors is calculated according to the number of the turning vehicles at the intersections provided with the loop detectors. By adopting the above method, the road basic facility cost can be effectively saved, and the number of the turning vehicles at the intersections can be precisely estimated. The system is designed according to the above method and comprises a loop detector data collection module, a probe vehicle data collection module and a vehicle number prediction module; in addition, the system is easy to operate and maintain and is strong in feasibility.
