The invention provides a bullet train shunting operation safety protection system, and an automatic shunting safety protection method realized on the basis of the system and solves the problem that the existing bullet train shunting operation system cannot directly gather state information of a scene signal lamp. The scheme lies in that a ground shunting transponder 3 is arranged 15 meters ahead a scene annunciator 5, the other ground shunting transponder 2 is arranged 20 meters ahead the scene annunciator 5, the ground shunting transponder 3 and the ground shunting transponder 2 form a ground shunting transponder group, the ground shunting transponder group and the scene annunciator 5 are connected through a transponder junction box 4, and train control equipment 1 on a bullet train is used for receiving message information sent by the ground shunting responder group. According to the invention, a safety protection system is established in a way of installing the ground transponders at positions required for protection in a line on the basis of not changing the existing on-board train control equipment, and thus safe and powerful guarantees are provided for the bullet train when shunting operation and train meeting and departure operation are performed at bullet train sections.
