The invention provides an elevator and a compensating sheave employed by the elevator. According to the scheme, even in a high-lift elevator, the tension of a main suspension line can be conveniently applied, and the upsizing of a compensating sheave can be avoided. The compensating sheave respectively applies tension to compensation ropes in connection with an elevator car and a counterpoise. A tension adjusting mechanism (30) capable of adjusting the tension applied to a compensation rope is arranged and comprises a pair of compensation sheave guide rails (12) fixed in a lifting channel (28); a sheave main body (8) having side plates (10) and a drum portion (8a) rotatingly arranged between the side plates; a guide plate (12) covering the upper surface of the sheave main body; a fixing support (17) installed on the compensation sheave guide rails, and fixedly provided with a screw rod (14) at a position higher than the guide plate; a movable plate (20) with a nut screwing with the screw rod; and a spring (21) arranged between the guide plate and the movable plate.
