When an engine is started and a transmission clutch is engaged in response to an EV->HEV mode switch request (t1), the transmission clutch is engaged at t3 to t4 during engine startup before an engine auto-drive start time (t6). During clutch engagement (t3 to t4), the engine is in startup (t2 to t6) prior to auto-drive, a large engine torque is not inputted to the transmission clutch as is clear from the engine torque (Te) waveform at t3 to t4, and during EV travel, there is no large torque difference with the transmission clutch output torque, which is a value of less motor torque from an electric motor. The input/output rotation difference ([increment]N) in the transmission clutch is made smaller at t3 by cranking during engine startup at t2 to t6, and if the transmission clutch is engaged at t3, the transmission clutch engagement can be performed under reduced shock on the basis of the smaller input/output torque difference and input/output rotation difference.
