The invention relates to a device and a method for a traffic flow assistant for a vehicle, having a surroundings sensor system that detects the traffic-relevant objects on a traffic lane on which the vehicle is traveling and at least one other neighboring lane. Gaps in the traffic are detected by means of the surroundings sensors, and drive-dynamic parameters of the objects are determined, wherein future gaps in the traffic can be predicted from said gaps and parameters. A lane change possibility is ascertained for said detected gaps and predicted gaps, and a signal is generated from said lane change possibility, the current and/or predicted presence of gaps which are suitable for changing lanes in traffic, and the drive-dynamic status of the vehicle in order to change lanes, said signal depending on the lane change possibilities and an optimization strategy.
