Provided is a vehicle travel controller that can both improve the fuel economy of the vehicle when coasting and ensure the availability of negative braking pressure when braking becomes necessary. A vehicle-speed threshold (Va) for switching back from free-run coasting to normal travelling is set lower than a vehicle-speed threshold (Vb) for switching back from coasting in neutral to normal travelling. Thus, when the speed (V) of the vehicle is greater than the former of said vehicle-speed thresholds (Va), at which times negative braking pressure is more necessary, the vehicle is coasting in neutral, meaning that the engine (12) is running, so when braking does become necessary, the engine (12) is running, making negative braking pressure available. Also, when the speed (V) of the vehicle is less than or equal to said vehicle-speed threshold (Va), at which times negative braking pressure is less necessary, the abovementioned free-run coasting, which stops the engine (12), can be performed, allowing fuel-efficient coasting.
