The present invention improves the precision with which it is determined whether or not a driver is mistakenly operating an accelerator instead of a brake. The driver's pedal position (PPO) and the length of time (Te) for which said pedal position (PPO) has remained past a pedal-position threshold (Pth) are detected, and if said length of time (Te) exceeds a length-of-time threshold (Tth), it is determined that the driver is mistakenly operating the accelerator instead of the brake. Furthermore, the speed (V) of the ego vehicle, the uphill gradient (Sr) of the road surface, and the length of time (Tp) for which the driver has been operating the accelerator are detected; the aforementioned pedal-position threshold (Pth) is varied in accordance with said speed (V), uphill gradient (Sr), and length of time (Tp); and the aforementioned length-of-time threshold (Tth) is also varied in accordance with said speed (V), uphill gradient (Sr), and length of time (Tp).
