The invention discloses a traffic flow online monitoring system and method based on a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer and belongs to the application field of intelligent transportation and distributed optical fiber sensing. The method comprises accumulating the optical time domain reflecting differential signals of the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer at different times within a unit statistical period to structure a traffic travel temporal-spatial response diagram; performing binarization and image preprocessing to convert the response diagram into a two-dimensional vehicle travelling track diagram; detecting vehicle travelling tracks and parameters through a search matching method to count the number of the tracks and to obtain traffic flow volume; according to the inclination angles and the pixel positions of the track, calculating information such as vehicle driving speed, direction, position and the like and accordingly providing real-time traffic and road condition information. The traffic flow online monitoring system and method based on the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer provides an important device and method for solving the traffic jamming problem and achieving intelligent traffic management of intelligent cities.
