The invention discloses an energy-saving elevator. The energy-saving elevator comprises a car, a counterweight device, an upper water storage pond and a lower water storage pond, wherein the counterweight device is connected with a steel wire rope and a pulley block and is provided with a cavity capable of storing water, the upper water storage pond is provided with an upper water pump and an upper pipeline, and the lower water storage pond is provided with a lower water pump and a lower pipeline. When the counterweight device stops on the top floor, the cavity is connected with the upper pipeline, an upper control valve arranged on the upper pipeline is used for controlling the upper pipeline to open and close, and the upper water pump is used for pumping water from the counterweight device; when the counterweight device stops on the ground floor, the cavity is connected with the lower pipeline, a lower control valve arranged on the lower pipeline is used for controlling the lower pipeline to open and close, and the lower water pump is used for pumping water from the counterweight device. The invention further discloses an application method of the energy-saving elevator. The energy-saving elevator and the application method thereof have the advantage that according to the principle that mechanical energy required by a motor is the least when the total weight of the counterweight device is equal to that of the car, the counterweight device adjustable in weight is invented, so that the mechanical energy required by the motor is reduced substantially.
