The invention relates to a vehicle violation detection method for overtaking a left lane. The method comprises the following steps: providing a vehicle violation detection system for overtaking the left lane, wherein the system comprises a master controller and a first vehicle detection subsystem, a second vehicle detection subsystem and a third vehicle detection subsystem which are positioned on a through lane cut-off line, at a position which is a preset length from the through lane cut-off line and at a position which is a preset length from a left lane cut-off line; determining whether a vehicle in a through lane with the vehicle violation for overtaking the left lane exists by the master controller based on detection results of the first vehicle detection subsystem, the second vehicle detection subsystem and the third vehicle detection subsystem. Through the method, the vehicle violation for overtaking the left lane and related vehicle information can be accurately and effectively detected, and important guarantee is provided for regularizing normal driving behaviors of the vehicles and developing legal driving habits for drivers.
