The invention discloses an eddy current retarder capable of automatically regulating an air gap and a control method for the eddy current retarder. The eddy current retarder comprises iron cores, a gap regulation coil, a sealed bag, stator brackets, linear bearings and excitation coils, wherein the linear bearings are mounted on the brackets; the excitation coils are arranged on outer rings of the linear bearings; the iron cores are mounted in the linear bearings in a matching manner; the left and right iron cores are fixedly connected with the left and right end faces of the sealed bag respectively; the gap regulation coil is fixed with the sealed bag. According to the eddy current retarder, the magnitude of current of the gap regulation coil is controlled to change the viscosity of a magnetorheological fluid in the sealed bag to further control gaps between the iron cores and a rotor disc; the shortcoming of greater air gap design value of a conventional structure is overcome, and the air gap design value can be remarkably reduced; when the temperature of the rotor disc rises and the inner lateral surface is heated to be expanded, the expansion of the inner lateral surface of the rotor disc can be estimated, and the air gap of the eddy current retarder can be automatically regulated; the braking performance of the eddy current retarder at high temperature is improved on the premise of ensuring the braking safety.
