The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle vehicle-mounted power supply system in a motor vehicle and the motor vehicle vehicle-mounted power supply system. The motor vehicle comprises an internal combustion engine, a primary battery and a secondary battery, and the desulfation of the primary battery takes place during operation of the internal combustion engine in order to remove a vitriol layer. According to the invention, once the internal combustion engine (12, 22) is switched off, desulfation of the primary battery continues to take place using a secondary battery wherein electrical energy is transmitted to the primary battery (10, 20) from the secondary battery (11, 21).
