The invention provides an automotive adaptive cruise system and method. The automotive adaptive cruise system comprises an automotive CAN (controller area network) bus, a radar sensor, a camera sensor, a navigator, a wheel speed sensor, a heading angle sensor, a gearbox controller, a steering angle sensor, an engine sensor, an electronic stability program, a shifting lever or button, an instrument and an electronic control unit, and the radar sensor, the camera sensor, the navigator, the wheel speed sensor, the heading angle sensor, the gearbox controller, the steering angle sensor, the engine sensor, the electronic stability program, the shifting lever or the button, the instrument and the electronic control unit are connected with the automotive CAN bus. Information of the navigator and the camera sensor can be acquired from the automotive CAN bus by the electronic control unit, so that the electronic control unit can control an ACC (adaptive cruise control) system to be automatically turned off, the ACC system prompts a driver to turn off the ACC system through the electronic control unit, and the electronic control unit controls the ACC system to be automatically turned off and prompts the driver through sound or an image if the driver does not respond within five seconds, so that passengers on an automobile or pedestrians are prevented from easily suffering from traffic accidents.
