An method for manufacturing a sub-assembly of a railcar body comprises 1) providing a first and a second extrusions; 2) placing the first extrusion on a working surface; 3) juxtaposing at least a portion of the second joining interface of the second extrusion with a first joining interface of the first extrusion; 3) interlocking the second joining interface of the second extrusion with the first joining interface of the first extrusion, thereby creating a longitudinal joint line along the length of both extrusions; and 4) using at least one robot, welding the second extrusion to the first extrusion along the longitudinal joint line. All steps may be performed by the robot.
