An elevator arrangement (1) is proposed to comprise a car (3) which is displaceable within an elevator shaft between various floors (5) within a building, an elevator control (7) and a plurality of fixtures (9), each fixture (9) being located at one of the floors (5) and being connected to the elevator control (7) for an exchange of information. Each fixture (9) comprises a sound detector (13) arranged and adapted for predominantly detecting sound characteristics of sound propagating within the elevator shaft. Preferably, the elevator arrangement is adapted to perform a fixture position learning procedure comprising determining a position information for each of the fixtures (9) located at each of the floors (5) based on sound characteristics of sound propagating within the elevator shaft detected by the sound detector (13) comprised in the fixture (9) located at the respective floor (5) and storing the determined position information for subsequent identification purposes for each of the fixtures (9). For example, changes in sound characteristics may be measured while the elevator car (3) is driven through the elevator shaft(25). Time-dependent occurrences of sound pressure peaks or frequency shifts due to Doppler effects may be measured at the various fixtures and position information for each fixture may be derived e.g. from a sequence order of such time-dependent occurrences or, alternatively, by correlating the occurrence of such changes in sound characteristics with information about the current position of the elevator car (3) provided e.g. by the elevator control (7).
