The present invention relates to an apparatus and a corresponding method for video compression in a vehicle. Vehicle motion information provided by various sensors is employed to reconstruct the vehicle's current state of motion and to estimate the optical flow within the camera's visual field. The estimated optical flow is used to improve coding efficiency of the video encoder. Particularly in motion compensation based coding, motion vectors describing apparent motion of objects within the video images can be determined more efficiently by taking the estimated optical flow into account.
