The invention relates to a method for investigating a functional behaviour of a component of a technical installation. In order to specify an improved method for investigating a functional behaviour of a component of a technical installation, according to the invention, in the method, a signal (4) from the component to be investigated and representing the functional behaviour of the component be compared with a reference signal (6), which describes an average functional behaviour of identical components. It is also proposed that, during the comparison, a comparative variable (14) describing the deviation of the signal (4) from the reference signal (6) be determined. In addition, in the method according to the invention, a property of the occurrence of the comparative variable (14) is determined by using a predefinable distribution (30) of a multiplicity of such comparative variables.
