The invention relates to a method for digging out a stationary motor vehicle, wherein the driver specifies a starting direction for the motor vehicle using an operating element. A pendulum movement of the motor vehicle is generated by means of chronologically successive driver-independent drive force pulses which have a first intensity. The spatial amplitude of the pendulum movement is ascertained and compared with a specified threshold, and if the spatial amplitude of the pendulum movement of the motor vehicle exceeds the threshold, a starting movement of the motor vehicle in the specified starting direction is subsequently generated using at least one drive force pulse which is oriented in the specified starting direction and which has a second intensity that is larger than the first intensity.
