A channel-section stainless steel base 2 has a slot 4 for the reception of drive shaft 6. Shaft 6 connects with worn drive gearbox 8 to which is joined de motor 10. This is driven by the boat's batteries. Motor 10 and gearbox 8 are secured to base 2 by fasteners 12. Winch drum 14 is free to spin on shaft 6 but can be slowed by plunger 16 pressing against friction disc 18 fastened to one face of drum 14. To the opposite face 20 of drum 14 is attached a ratchet toothed wheel 22. Drive shaft 6 has a band which bears an exterior male thread 24 in order to receive gear wheel 26 which has a bore provided with a corresponding female thread. To the interior face of the gear wheel is attached a complimentary ratchet wheel 28. The pair are free to rotate with the drive shaft but if the gear wheel is retarded even slightly the gear wheel will progress axially, driven by the threaded band in the direction imposed by the motor 10. a. ia 20 1~ t Fj
