An idle reduction engine shutdown and restart system (10) for a machine (12) is disclosed. The machine (12) can include an engine (14) operably connected to a drivetrain (16) including ground engaging propulsion members (18). The drivetrain (16) can be configured to transmit mechanical energy between the engine (14) and the ground engaging propulsion members (18). The idle reduction engine shutdown and restart system (10) for the machine (12) can include a starter (64) operatively associated with the engine (14) and configured to effectuate ignition of the engine (14). The idle reduction engine shutdown and restart system (10) for the machine (12) can further include an idle reduction engine shutdown and restart controller (74) electronically and controllably connected to the engine (14) and configured to shut down the engine (14) in an engine shutdown mode. The idle reduction engine shutdown and restart controller (74) can additionally be electronically and controllably connected and configured to actuate the engine (14) and the starter (64) to start the engine (14) in one or more of an initial engine start mode and one or more engine restart modes.
