An economical and effective way to upgrade lower quality cobalt in the US National Defense stockpile has been reported by scientists at the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). The stockpile, a US government-owned reserve of key military and industrial materials, contains 21,000 tons of cobalt (about 75 per cent of the total) that does not meet specifications for use in aircraft engines and other critical applications.
