While we must not be taken as agreeing in toto with the views expressed in this article, there is no doubt that there is considerable room for criticism in the present system of classification of records by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. As Professor Everling points out, their very number detracts from the importance of each. It will no doubt be a surprise to many readers to learn that out of 186 records open to different categories of aeroplane, only 98 (approximately 50 per cent) have been considered of sufficient importance to be worth attempting. The recent innovation of “starring” certain records as of outstanding importance is a step in the right direction; but we agree with Professor Everling that many of those existing, in some instances in name only, might be allowed to go. Where there will be two opinions will be on the actual individual new records which he proposes should be inaugurated
