THE large and elaborate installations needed for the testing of gas turbine power plants have become familiar, together with the bulky equipment needed to reduce the noise to a tolerable level. It was therefore interesting to see at Farnborough last September a complete test plant for jet engines of up to 12,500 lb. thrust arranged to be towed on the road. This is possible because the pure jet provides its own means of absorbing its power, and because the requirement for this particular plant was that it could be used by operators or the services on advanced operational airfields, or in other temporary or semi-permanent situations, where the noise can be accepted.
