PROGRESS in the development of turbofan engines for civil and military applications has enabled requirements from around 5,000lb to over 70,000lb thrust to be satisfied or anticipated, with prospects for this range to be extended. The three major powerplant manufacturers (Rolls-Royce, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney) are engaged in fiercely competitive efforts to increase thrust levels, reduce specific fuel consumption (SFC) and lower noise and pollution levels. This has to be accomplished within a strict weight control programme with the achievement of higher overall efficiency as the aim.
