THE problem of accurately calculating the actual altitude reached in the course of a record attempt was for long solved by direct reading of the diagrammatic curve of a recording altimeter. This elementary procedure was considered satisfactory before the War at a time when high altitude flying remained an exception and the physical properties of the upper air had not been the subject of extensive scientific research.
