IT has been well known that for some ten years past—starting actually in 1921—extensive researches have been carried out under the auspices of the Aeronautical Research Committee into the design of compression-ignition engines for aircraft. Experiments have been in progress at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, at the Shoreham works of Messrs. Ricardo and Co., and elsewhere, on units of various types and sizes. Among these have been single-cylinder units, such as that known as the “20 T”, a large cylinder with a bore of 8 in. and a stroke of 11 in. at Farnborough, as well as multiple-cylinder engines—either specially constructed for experimental purposes or converted from the ordinary petrol type.
