IN conception, the conventional airscrew is an extremely simple transformer of energy and when constructed with skill can be, under certain conditions, a highly efficient means of propulsion. Its function is to develop thrust, the factors concerned in which are: h.p. of engine, forward speed of aircraft, engine r.p.m. and air density. For any given combination of these factors there is a limiting thrust, obtainable only by an ideal airscrew designed to meet the set of conditions, which cannot be exceeded by changing the geometry of the screw within the limits of diameter usually imposed by other considerations.
