Recent developments have played an important part in accelerating ‘turn-round’ time of aircraft on the ground, which is of course a vital factor in the economic operation of airline services. Equipment developed by the Aviation Division of the Dimlop Rubber Company towards this end has included the propeller brake (which stops ‘windmilling’ as soon as possible after touchdown), and air-cooling systems, which reduce to a minimum the time required for aircraft brakes to recover their full capacity after use. Working in collaboration with Dimlop, B.O.A.C. fitted this latter system to their Comet fleet—with the result that their landing bill was reduced by £150,000 a year.
